Summary
Chapter 17 depicts Ike in his landscaping shop the morning after disposing of Andy’s corpse with a wood chipper. He reflects on how instinctive both his murder and disposal of Andy felt, thinking, “Human beings were wired to get used to just about anything. That didn’t make you hard. It made you indoctrinated” (98). In Chapter 19, the Rare Breed and Grayson arrive at Ike’s shop; Oscar informed them he had seen Ike’s truck when he and Andy searched the house. They are intent upon attacking Ike but Ike puts a machete to Grayson’s throat and Jazzy pulls out a gun. The Breed leave the shop, but Ike now suspects they were involved in his son’s murder and is intent upon confronting them. He thinks, “There was no turning back.
