Summary
In “The Enemy Within,” a woman named Cookie Dupree was interrogated by unknown interlocutors about her boyfriend, Henry Skrabble. They asked Cookie about Henry's taste in television shows, and why he watched the shows he did. They asked similar questions about the books he read. The interrogators then told Cookie they believed Henry was “Fake Woke” (164). Cookie was aghast and insisted this could not be true. She then asked if it was possible that Henry pretending to be politically and socially aware was “better than nothing at all” (165), and the interrogators stated that on the contrary, it was “a thousand times worse” (165).
In “The Secret,” a man called Cope was interviewed for a job by a man called Marsh. Marsh explained portentously that, once hired, Cope could never quit. Cope agreed, and the two men rode an elevator down to...
