Seagram arrives in Los Angeles and rents a car and drives to the home of Adeline Hobart. Adeline has been remarried for over sixty years but the War Department ignored her letters and kept sending the pension checks. She tells him that she received a $10,000 indemnity from the government when Jake died. She tells him her story of how she first met Jake when she was sixteen years old. She describes his bright red hair to Seagram. She says she saw him for the last time a year later.
Seagram notices that she is very nervous. He says she heard from him after the mining disaster and she tells him that she was sworn to secrecy. He finally calls the President and lets Adeline talk to him. He asks...
