Chapter 24 Summary
A few days before the wedding, one of the men, who had refused to loan money to Salvador when he most needed it, shows up at his house, wanting to give him a goat for his wedding dinner. Salvador becomes almost insane and shoots the goat and calls him names for only wanting to be his friend when he has money. Salvador's mother sees this and begins to worry about her son and his ability to hold his temper. When she confronts him, she tells Salvador that if he can hate Mexicans, and his friends when they don not treat him right, then the devil can get him to hate Lupe and their children when they come too. Salvador is horrified at this thought and yells, "No! No!" And then she reminds him that he was the last to come from her loins...
