Summary
In Chapter 21, Seema asks her friend Fiaz to show her, her mother, and Tahera around San Francisco. She believes Fiaz will help break the tension between the three. She does not share with them that Fiaz is homosexual. Nafeesa is charmed by Fiaz, but Tahera will barely speak to him.
In Chapter 22, as Fiaz teases Seema because her Urdu is poor, Nafeesa recalls how her husband’s love of “everything English” (54) drowned out her attempts to influence her daughters. As Nafeesa watches Fiaz and Seema, she thinks they look good together.
In Chapter 23, Seema tells Tahera that the last time she was at the Golden Gate Bridge was with Tahera’s children. She had taken them sightseeing while Tahera was at a conference.
