Water

Water plays an important role in the novel. Water is a symbol of cleansing and rebirth. When Harry takes a wet washcloth to Ruth’s made up face, he is washing away her past life as a prostitute. She gives up that life for him. Rebecca June’s drowning leads to Harry’s renewal of a quest for a better life.

Car

The car is a symbol of freedom. Harry Angstrom gets in the car and drives to get away from his life. He discovers that freedom is not in your location, but has a spiritual and mental association.

West Virginia

Harry claims that the only place he was ever happy was in West Virginia. The thought of the hills and sky made him feel free.

Church

The Church figures prominently in the novel. The Springers seek advice from Reverend Eccles because he is their spiritual advisor...
