The Babbitt House, Freedom Alabama, Present
Elvis loves her family home and gives a lengthy description of it at the end of Chapter 3. It is a white house with black shutters. Elvis’s mother called it a “farmer’s cottage” because of its covered porch (26). Elvis describes a stained glass window on the front door, which leads into a mudroom and living room--Elvis’s favorite room, equipped with “the most comfortable couch” (26). The kitchen is bright yellow, a color Elvis’s mom called the happiest color.
Serengeti Park Zoo, Alabama, Present
Halfway between Freedom and Opelika, Alabama, this zoo is where Elvis spends most of her time when she is not at home or at school. It is “the second-largest zoo in Alabama” (119).
