Summary
The family visits a sleep specialist in Birmingham to address Lizzie’s sleepwalking. The doctor finds no clear cause but hands Elvis’s dad a business card for the St. Cloud’s Hospital for Women. Elvis stays up that evening to keep an eye on Lizzie, who does not have a sleepwalking episode that night. Elvis continues research on her mother’s book. Elvis recalls when Eva was grieving the death of her own mother. She spent her days in the bathtub. Then, after some weeks, her mother got out of the tub, saying, “Your body only lets you hurt that much for so long” (58).
The next evening, Lizzie does sleepwalk. Elvis chases her outside. Lizzie climbs into the neighbor’s chicken coop, cracking eggs on her head, chickens going crazy all around. In the morning, Lizzie makes Elvis promise not to tell...
