Summary
For reasons unbeknown to him, 10 years were taken off of You Choose’s sentence. The narrator points out that there was barren land as far as inmates could see. When You Choose was released, he traveled north, drank a lot, and got into many fights. His appearance became scarred, lacerated, and intimidating. Once back on the reservation, he realized no one remembered him as tribal chairman. He found a place to illegally purchase a gun. The narrator shifts focus to the moon, and discusses the difference between the White Man’s calendar and the Lakota tracking the moon for the passage of time. During the first August moon’s cycle, Rick Overlooking Horse taught the boys to make berry stew.
