Susan Cain, the author, speaks about her history at the beginning of the book, and it's clear that she wrote this book in part because she is an introvert. She wants to find out more information about herself and also wants to help other introverts.
In the beginning chapters, she writes about a Wall Street lawyer who feared a tough negotiation but who pulled it off because of her ability to listen to others. She later reveals that this person was in fact her, and she had to make her own evolution with regard to understanding how being an introvert has affected her.
