Summary
Maja meets her attorney, Peder Sander, for the first time in Chapter 10. Sander realizes she doesn't even know the charges leveled against her, so he tells her that she is "'under suspicion of complicity'" and "'reasonable suspicion of homicide, among other things'" (104). Although still confused, she does come to understand she is in an adult jail on suicide watch. The author slips in an important piece of information during Maja's interrogation. The police want her to define the exact nature of her relationship to Sebastian. When they ask if he was her boyfriend, she whispers, "'I told him I couldn't handle it anymore…that it had to end'" (109).
