Summary
At the beginning of Chapter 7, Maja lies on a stretcher, still in shock, while the ambulance carries her from the upper school to the hospital. She feels disoriented because she cannot see any familiar neighborhood landmarks. When she hears a siren from another ambulance in the distance, she immediately wonders if every one of her classmates is dead. "I saw them die. Everyone but me was dead, and just a few moments ago we were alive" (74).
At the hospital the staff undress her and put her items of clothing in different bags, then doctors and nurses run tests on her, scrape under her nails and within her body. Police officers interrogate her, though she didn't understand it was an interrogation at the time. She can't understand why she has to stay overnight at the hospital when nothing is wrong with her.
