Quichotte
Quichotte is the novel’s title character. His real name is Ismail Smile. He is originally from India, but he has lived in the United States for decades. He is about 70 years old, and he works as a traveling salesman for Smile Pharmaceutical, Inc., which is owned by Quichotte’s successful cousin. Quichotte loves to watch television, and at the beginning of the novel, he suddenly falls in love with famous television personality Miss Salma R. He decides to change his name to Quichotte (after famous literary character Don Quixote) and go on a quest to win Salma’s love. Quichotte is convinced (perhaps self-deluded) that the universe has preordained for him and Salma to be in love with each other.
