Mira
Mira is the main character of the novel. Mira grows up with her father. Her father loves her more than anything else in the world. Mira also loves her father, and delights in his company and attention throughout her childhood. He teaches her about the world and all the beauty and mystery it holds. He promises that someday he will buy her many beautiful things, including color itself.
When Mira gets older, she decides to leave home. Although she feels as if she is betraying her father, her departure from home is necessary for her growth and evolution. She moves to an unnamed city where she begins pursuing a career in art criticism at the American Academy of American Critics.
