Parenthood is explored in the work in reference to the difficulty present in raising a child within an abusive household and the sacrifices that women make to become mothers in terms of their own hopes and dreams. In Brian’s father’s case, he was incapable of leaving behind his own ideals of what it means to be a Black man, and he did not allow his son to be who he was without judgment.
