Chapter Fifteen Summary
The narration now follows Lila from the moment she left the Bates Motel. Rather than find Sheriff Chambers, as she said she was going to do, Lila marches to the Bates house hoping to speak with the mystery woman in the window herself. When no one comes to the door, a strange anger overtakes Lila. Using an old skeleton key, Lila manages to break the lock on the front door and walk inside. Quickly but carefully, Lila takes stock of the Bates home. Everything is very old, as if it's been preserved for a museum. She notices Bates' bedroom immediately: nothing but a single mattress on the floor, small enough to be a child's bed, certainly not a grown man's. On the floor of his bedroom, Lila notices a soiled woman's handkerchief - the type an old woman might tie around...
