Moth

The moth that Larry watches in the police headquarters in Chapter 1 is symbolic of powerlessness. Throughout the interrogation, Larry studies the trapped insect in the light fixture overhead. This image foreshadows Larry's arrest, detainment, and disappearance at the end of the chapter.

Protest

The protest that Eilish and her family attend in Chapter 3 is symbolic of autonomy. Although Eilish is afraid of losing anything or anyone else, she attends the rally as a way to fight back. She is making a choice to exercise her voice and liberty in spite of the associated risks.

White Scarf

The white scarf that Eilish wears to the rally and throughout the novel is symbolic of peace. Eilish is fighting for a return to the normalcy she once knew.
