Dublin, Ireland
Dublin, Ireland is the primary backdrop of the novel. This is the city in which the Stack family lives and works. Two years prior to the start of the novel, the right wing National Alliance Party rose to power. They also instated a secret police force called the Garda National Services Bureau, or GNSB. The more power the party and the police gain, the more unfamiliar Dublin becomes.
Over the course of the novel, the war between the state and the rebel forces disfigures Dublin. The city that was once Eilish's home has become a battleground. The streets are filled with trash and rats, rubble and dust. Eilish cannot take a walk, procure food, or visit her father without fearing for life. The city's rapid transfigurement over the course of Prophet Song conveys the devastations of war.
