Summary
In Chapter 8, Eilish returns home to find Bailey missing. There has been another airstrike. Eilish is hurt. Molly says Bailey went out for milk. Terrified for Bailey, Eilish rushes outside to tell the rebels about her son. Molly begs “her to come back home,” but Eilish continues “towards the site of the first airstrike” (241). The streets are filled with dust, debris, and people. Eilish sees Bailey from a distance.
Bailey has been wounded. He has a piece of shrapnel in his skull. Eilish begs for help. Molly runs out with Ben. She notices Eilish is barefoot.
Molly takes Ben home so Eilish can help Bailey. A driver takes them to the hospital. Eilish sees “herself become a passenger to her own life” (244).
The drive is long and disorienting. They have trouble getting through the checkpoints because neither Eilish nor Bailey have their identification...
