Summary
In Chapter 7, Eilish mentally tells Larry about the city’s destruction. She describes the ravaged Dublin streets to him. When a truck “with rebel soldiers passes,” Eilish searches “for Mark’s face among them” (204). Bailey worries about Mark. Eilish does not know what to say or do. She wishes Larry were there to explain things to Bailey.
Eilish goes out in search of her loved ones. Everyone is seeking those “who have disappeared, the people arrested, detained by the regime” (205). At Simon’s she realizes how bad things have become. Simon is unaware of everything that is happening.
Eilish comes home to find an unfamiliar woman at her kitchen table with Molly. The woman, Maeve, says that Áine hired her to help Eilish get their family to Canada. Eilish does not want her help. She fears that as soon as they leave, Mark and...
