Summary
This section begins with three men: Private Ricky Hauser, Schiff, a Jewish man, and General Macauley. Schiff works for the Department of the Interior, and Hauser is driving the other two men around. Schiff grew up on the streets of Chicago. He left Chicago to go to law school.
Schiff understands the suspicion that took over with the Joint Chiefs after Pearl Harbor. They believe there will be another attack. The government has created an Exclusion Zone where Japanese-American people are not allowed. Ten sites were set aside throughout the nation for detaining Japanese-Americans. Schiff’s job is to build one near Mount Whitney. Discussions were had about what to call the internees. They were told never to call them Japanese-Americans, just Japanese.
