Summary

In Chapter 11, Ryland awakens and returns to the tunnel, where Rocky is waiting. Rocky has made a small version of the airlock that allows the two to pass objects back and forth. Ryland tries to show Rocky Earth's units of measure, but when he gives him a tape measure, it becomes clear that Rocky is blind.


In a flashback, Eva Stratt appeared before a Washington D.C. court, charged with violating copyright law. She explained that the Hail Mary must be equipped with “the collected knowledge of humankind” and that an international treaty has designated her “immune from prosecution for any crime anywhere on Earth” (193). She leaves the courtroom, escorted by her personal entourage of U.S. military personnel.


Back on the ship, Ryland finds a sound-wave analysis program on a computer.
