Strong Female Characters
One of the more prominent themes in this novel is the presence of strong female characters. The women in this novel tend to take active roles while the males seem to take a back seat. One of these strong women, though she may not realize her strength, is Mia. Mia uses her strength to try to protect her mother from stress and uncomfortable situations during her pregnancy. She throws away or gives away food that could be dangerous to a pregnant woman and her baby even though her actions make her mother mad. Mia also has the courage to use her grandmother's teachings on her grandmother. When her Grandmere hides in her hotel room after she learns that Helen and Frank have eloped, left the country and will not be at the wedding that she planned for them.
