Summary
Janae, Ainsley, Darius, and a reluctant Zuri head to a nearby Brooklyn music festival in Chapter 7. Zuri is tagging along but resents the white people who come to her neighborhood and erase the history of violence, struggle, and ethnic diversity which all blend to make up its character. Ainsley and Janae are having a wonderful time, clearly enjoying their romance, while Darius and Zuri argue about his clothes and the way he seems to be ‘not black enough,’ failing to be tough and ‘hood’ which Zuri thinks is more natural. Suddenly, a young black man named Warren appears, introducing himself to Zuri and saying he is a classmate of Darius’ at a prestigious private school downtown. Zuri is shocked: in Warren, she sees an attractive, black, and down-to-earth man who is street-smart in a way she thinks Darius isn’t. She gives Warren...
