Summary
In Chapter 7, Nina remembers her sophomore year of high school. She did not fit in with the other preppy kids, but she found a best friend in Benny. Nina and Benny spent all their time together and eventually fell in love. One night, they had sex in the caretaker’s cabin, but then Benny’s father had found them and ordered them apart. He told Nina she was never allowed to see his son again. Benny did not argue or defend her. That night, her mother said that they had to leave town because of the Lieblings. Nina wrote Benny letters, but he never responded. Nina had never gotten in touch with him, not even when she learned his parents had died or that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She hated the Lieblings for stealing her future.
