Summary
In the prologue, a seemingly omniscient narrator explains, in present tense, that Lake Tahoe is known for having uncharted depths. Dozens of bodies, preserved by the cold, have been dumped in its depths throughout the decades.
When “Part One: Nina,” begins in Chapter 1, the same seemingly third-person omniscient narrator continues, zooming in on a nameless woman at a nightclub in Los Angeles. She is acting drunk, but she is not drunk. She approaches a rich man named Alexi Petrov, then conspires to go home with him. She slips something in his drink, then drives him home. After she puts him into bed, she catalogues all the pricy antiques in his home. She takes a cab to her house and climbs into bed with her boyfriend, Lachlan, who congratulates her on doing a good job. Later, Lachlan will return with a truck...
