Chapters 17-20 Summary

Emily goes out to dinner at Applebee's with her swim team in Chapter 17. There, she remembers Ali joking about her brother being in a mental ward, but dismisses it. She also tells her friends on the team that she's going to the art opening, with a boy. They are surprised, but happy for her. Spencer, who is also at the restaurant, urges Emily to meet her in the bathroom, where she shows Emily the new note from A. After Spencer leaves the bathroom, Mrs. Colbert enters and harshly warns Emily to stay away from her son. Finally, Emily receives a picture from A on her phone, of Officer Wilden leaving confession.

In Chapter 18, Hanna goes for a job, and runs into Officer Wilden at the Cauvanagh house. She looks at his black car, and recognizes an ice-fishing permit on the windshield...
