Summary
Lydia lays on the couch with Rick, watching the news. The police had released a composite sketch of a man seen in the vicinity of Anna Kilpatrick’s car, the focus of the local report. Lydia sees Anna’s family in the background of the press conference, and remembers how her own family must have looked after Julia disappeared. Rick asks Lydia what Claire is like now, and Lydia replies that she truly has no idea. She used to believe that she was the only one to really know her sister, but that she “didn’t know Claire with Paul” (109). Her sister had been the type to “[hold] herself back. She was cocaptain, not captain. She could’ve dated the quarterback, but she dated his brother instead…she didn’t know a way to explain it that made sense. No one understood striving...
