Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

Beth Wright is driving in her car. Someone, who she thinks is Bill Brandon, is following her and trying to run her off the road. She thinks it is Bill Brandon because she has been interviewing his sister Marlene about the St. Clair Children's Home for a story she is doing. As the car following her bumps her, Beth calls 9-1-1 on the phone. Then she tries to call Nick Hutchins, who she is supposed to meet and her own house to check her messages. When she calls her house, a boy answers instead of her machine picking up. She checks the number and it is the right number, but when she redials, nobody, not even the machine answers. She starts to head to the hidden house she rents in the woods, hoping Bill doesn't know where it is yet...
