Praxis grows up at 109 Holden Road. When she is a young girl, she lives here with her mother, Lucy, sister, Hypatia, and father, Benjamin. The early days of her childhood here are defined by tension, anger, and violence. After Benjamin runs off with a waitress, the atmosphere at Holden Road mutates. Lucy becomes increasingly distressed, and fails to care for herself, the house, or the girls. Eventually, Lucy is sent away to a mental hospital, and the sisters remain at Holden Road alone. When their officer arrives and discovers their living conditions, he sends Praxis away to live with Miss Leonard.
