Summary
Chipo Hama takes Abeo to Harlem, where he lives with his family, and where she immediately feels more comfortable. Chipo’s wife Femi is much warmer than Serafine and wraps Abeo in a hug as soon as they meet. Femi and Chipo have two daughters who call Abeo their sister. In this chapter, McFadden reveals that Abeo bathes with a bucket because she’s afraid of water after losing Pra. But no one minds and Femi says these things will change with time. Abeo says she sees Duma in her dreams and that he is always killing her. Femi tells Abeo to face her fears in her dreams as she has done in real life, to run at Duma instead of away from him and “end him.” Abeo likes the African community in Harlem. She goes to amateur night at the Apollo Theater...
