Summary
In Chapter 22, Aymee gives birth to a son she names Ofi. Juba comes home with a mango hidden under her skirt that she says fell off a truck and that she rescued. At first, the other girls are afraid to eat the mango. “The girls exchanged fearful looks,” McFadden writes (129). Duma barges into the hut, but he does not see the mango because Juba kicks it into the corner. Duma walks over to Aymee, peering down at Ofi. “I make pretty, pretty babies, don’t you think?” he asks (130), making it obvious he fathered Aymee’s son. He then tells Abeo that maybe one day he can make pretty babies with her. When Duma leaves, the girls finally eat the mango, sharing it. The next day, Juba brings home two bananas.
