When Maria Owens had come to Massachusetts she brought attention to herself because she was unwed, pregnant, had a collection of diamonds sewn into her dress, and dressed all in black. There had been rumors that Maria was a witch and people often avoided her. Maria had been was blamed for everything that went wrong regardless of how it turned out. She had often been seen outside traveling at night which increased the belief that she had been up to evil. The truth is that Maria had followed her lover to Massachusetts even though he had sent her a large sum of money to make her go away.
