Part 2: Sunday, Chapter 2, Pine Cove Summary
Pine Cove was once a whaling town called Harpooner's Cove. As whaling became less profitable, it became a ranching and mining town. After these also became unprofitable, the town's economy became dependent on tourists. In the 1960s, the town's name was changed to Pine Cove, distancing the tourist community from its whaling past. Today, the center of town is full of false English Tudor buildings, restaurants selling English food, and stores selling touristy trinkets.
On the night The Breeze disappears, all the dogs in Pine Cove begin barking at once. One of the town's residents, an evil developer, dies of a heart attack. Another saws a tree down on his neighbor's van. A family of raccoons gains intelligence and steals a stereo from the van.
