Summary

In Chapter 11, “Eighteen Park Circus,” Archie was happy at Park Circus with Baxter. Bella sent regular telegrams announcing her arrival in cities around the world. Then one day, she sent “a telegram from Paris” telling Baxter not to worry (73). Archie tried to comfort Baxter, but he did not calm down until they received two letters from Wedderburn and Bella the following week.

Baxter read Archie Wedderburn’s letter. Wedderburn accused Baxter of unleashing his unstable niece on him. He admitted he was a cad, but claimed Bella was a witch. He likened their situation to Oliver Goldsmith’s play She Stoops to Conquer. He now realized that although Bella was “dressed in the height of fashion,” she cared nothing for class distinctions (80). He was drawn to her because she resembled the poor housemaids he once slept with.
