Summary

Starting at the “4” chapter sub-heading, Baby begins to question where Ponyboy has been going. Ponyboy has told Baby that Gabriel “was [their] best editor,” explaining why they are often with him (109). Meanwhile, they seem to fall deeper and deeper in love with Gabriel. One day, they go to an event where they will be reading their writing, and they invite Gabriel to come and read some of his too. There, Ponyboy meets his girlfriend and feels uncomfortable and sad. In the bathroom there, Gabriel’s girlfriend asks Ponyboy if they think Gabriel is having an affair with someone. Before they can give a straight answer, she notices Ponyboy is crying, and goes out to buy her a beer.
