Summary

In Chapter 10, the ragtag posse made their way out of the canyon toward Rosasharon. The sheriff and deputy dug a grave for Martin Bird and consoled Silas as he recited his mother’s favorite poem over his father’s resting place. As they continued toward town, Roscoe Ollerenshaw spat insults and attempted to bribe his way out of custody. He vowed to take revenge on the sheriff and deputy. Mittenwool knew that Silas was afraid of Ollerenshaw, who was glaring menacingly in his direction, and made his voice audible to the ruffian. Silas had never seen his friend use this “corporeal tactic where he was literally haunting someone” but was pleased to see that Ollerenshaw was petrified of the seemingly disembodied voice (233).
