Summary
Sheriff Chalfont and Deputy Beautyman apprehended the ruffians as they waded with their guns held above their heads. The two men were eager to disclose the location of the cave, their boss’s scheme, and that Martin Bird was being held hostage to print counterfeit money using his expertise in the photographic arts. They explained that they were meant to bring Silas with them, days before, to threaten Martin, who they believed to be Mac Boat, into disclosing the location of twenty thousand dollars in gold coins. They begged to be punished lightly for their involvement in the criminal scheme. The lawmen tied the brothers together and muzzled their mouths before donning their clothing for a disguise. They plotted to approach the cave dressed as Eben and Seb and create decoys that gave the allusion of a larger posse.
