The Longi homewater
The Longi homewater, at the time of chapter 1 at least, is a relatively new settling place for the Longi tribe. Previously, the Tursiops pod had pushed them out of their old area and colonized it for themselves. The new Longi homewater is fairly safe for the time being, even though it is bordered fairly closely by sharks that want to prey on the dolphins. This is quite brutally indicated when Ea swims a short distance away in an attempt to rid herself of the remora fish that has attached itself to her, and when her mother sees a shark coming, she tries to warn her but is attacked and killed in the process. By the end of the novel, this area has become uninhabitable because of human interference, and the Longi have to flee.
