Summary
Chapter 21 begins with the Tursiops preparing for the return of the “ocean demons” (135). Upon learning that sarpa stocks are short, Split, the second-in-command, accuses Devi of letting her son Chit “eat at will,” despite the fact that he is “unable to eat sarpa” (136). When she fights back, everyone, including Ku, takes Split’s side, and she is forced to apologize. Later, Devi notices Chit staring out into the vast, worried that he wants to venture out. In actuality, he hears the three sub-males and Ea approaching.
Ea approaches the Tursiops area, which the Tursiops stole from the Longi tribe long ago, at the start of chapter 22. She finds herself dismayed by how “filthy” the water was in contrast to the “pristine and pure” water she had heard about from the other Longi (140).
