Chapters 5-7 Summary
Chapter 5. Jean Cooper watches the reporters who surround her house reporting on the death of her husband, cricket player Kenneth Fleming. Jean has already spoken to her younger two children about their father's death and attempts to speak with Jimmy, her eldest child, when he returns home. Unfortunately, Jimmy is sullen and refuses to talk about Kenneth. Instead, Jimmy wants to talk about Gabriella, Kenneth's lover. This upsets Jean, effectively ending the conversation.
Lynley and Havers continue their investigation by visiting the home of Hugh Patten, Gabriella Patten's husband. Hugh Patten admits to being aware of Gabriella's affair with Kenneth. Hugh suggests that Gabriella had multiple affairs during their short marriage. Hugh claims to have been at a club gambling the night of the murder.
Chapter 6. Lynley and Havers return to New Scotland Yard and briefly discuss what they have learned...
