Olivia and Chapter 1 Summary
Playing for the Ashes is a cricket term. When England lost to Australia in a test match series in 1882, an obituary for the English team appeared in a local newspaper. A year later, when England went to Australia for a rematch, it was said they were going to retrieve the ashes. When the team lost a second time, the bails were burned in effigy and the ashes presented to the team. Since that time, every time England plays Australia it is said they are playing for the ashes.
