Summary

After Evie published an article in a geographical magazine, a New York editor approached her about writing “a full-length book” about her oceanic explorations (315). Evie accepted, and decided to write a children’s book about her diving experiences so her children would know her. She spent several years working on the book, which she titled Clearly It Is Ocean. She wrote about her dives all over the world, featuring her experiences in California and Baja. She wrote in a direct tone, using simple language as she described the ocean’s beauty. She also implored her readers to love the ocean or it would die. She then ended the book with the story of her encounter with the cuttlefish decades prior.

The book was a success. Over time, Evie began receiving offers to speak around the world. After one trip, Bart picked her up...
