Summary

When Evie was 36 years old, she realized she loved women (236). However, she had chosen her life with Bart and was content with her career. Then one year, a “famous picture magazine asked her to dive off Truk Atoll” to photograph and write about “the war machines destroyed in Operation Hailstone” (236). During the dive, Evie was awed by the way ocean life had made new worlds of the sunken planes, ships, and bodies. Seeing the bodies made Evie realize she wanted “to be a reef” after she died (243).
