Summary
Todd noticed Rafi during his freshman year at Saint Ignatius. Then during sophomore year, Rafi won the Keane Fellowship, a “cash prize for underclassmen” named for Todd’s father (86, Powers’s italics). Todd found Rafi in the library, congratulated him, and invited him to join the chess club. Rafi spent a few days reading up about chess before joining. Rafi played Todd but Todd was more practiced at the game. Meanwhile, Todd began developing an early chess program. Over the following months, he and Rafi started playing chess constantly. Remembering his early friendship with Rafi gives Todd vertigo (92).
