Summary
Piranesi is somewhat shocked by his conversation with the other, especially when the Other suggests killing 16. The Other also says that he will resort to killing Piranesi if Piranesi succumbs to 16’s supposed insanity-inducing powers. Piranesi returns to his journals to make index entries for the names that the Prophet mentioned. He is shocked to discover that there are already entries for these people, and the entries reference journal #21. Piranesi soon discovers that his journal #1 is actually journal #21, and that someone scratched out the number two. Piranesi reads some of the entries and finds that they refer to an academic named Laurence Arne-Sayles, who was interested in the occult and was convicted of crimes such as kidnapping.
