Summary
In Part 1, “12 Days,” the morning after learning Kit’s secret, Piglet studies her reflection in the bathroom mirror but barely recognizes herself. She takes a hot shower and applies makeup to make herself feel better. She says nothing to Kit before leaving for work. On the train, she studies the other passengers, wishing she could slip into someone else’s life (79).
At work, Piglet finds flowers and a giant cookie from Kit. On her lunch break, she opens “five messages from him” but ignores them (80). However, she picks up his call while walking. Standing by the riverbank, she listens to him talk while imagining how Franny, Margot, and Sasha would respond if they knew Kit’s secret. Kit begs her to get mad at him but she refuses.
That evening, Piglet buys groceries at Waitrose, “as usual for a Monday” (83). Kit...
