Point of View

The novel is written from the main character Harri’s first person point of view. Harri is an 11-year-old boy who has recently moved to England with his family from Ghana. Therefore, his first person perspective is inspired by his age and his work to acclimate to his new surroundings. In one passage from the opening section, “March,” Harri says, “In England there’s a hell of different words for everything. It’s for if you forget one, there’s always another one left over. It’s very helpful” (5). This moment illuminates the ways in which the language of his community and peers will bleed into Harri’s narration.
