Summary
In Chapter 9, Jane was overwhelmed with guilt over the death of her father. Just as he had stood behind her and critiqued her while she played, Jane felt as if she had been standing behind Laura, supporting her when she shot Martin. Nick tried to tell Jane that she was not responsible for Martin’s murder but Jane was not able to believe him. She wondered if the drills through which Nick was putting them so they could pull off acts of opposition, like the father’s murder, were just the signs of a delusion. Regardless, Nick was able to talk to her in a way that made what they were doing make sense.
