Section 4: Fourth Picture and Chapter 4 Summary
Hollis draws Fourth Picture, The Old Man's Mountain, while sitting on the porch as Steven fiddles with the motor on the Old Man's truck and grumbles about not being allowed to drive on their property. At dinner one night, the Old Man gives Hollis a box of dozens of colored pencils, a pad of paper, erasers and a pencil sharpener. Telling him she loves French Blue, a soft color that is nearly purple, Hollis wants to hug him and tell him she has never received such a present, but though she ducks her head instead, he knows. Steven comes around the side of the truck and tells Hollis they do not have all day, so she puts the mountain picture in her box carefully, planning to give it to the Old Man as a present...
